To You

Today is Mother's Day. The day brings all kinds of feelings for all kinds of circumstances. So this. Is for you. To the mothers for whom today was a special day. The ones who, tonight,  lay your head on the pillow, full up with love. To the moms who celebrated this day for the first time. To the mothers in waiting who long for a baby. To the moms who are doing parenthood solo, without a partner to recognize you on this day. To the moms who have had to say goodbye. The ones for whom this day ... View the Post

I Packed A Bag

When will I stop packing a bag? I threw it together in 4 minutes. It sat in the backseat. A change of clothes, 2 sets of Tucker's pj's. His favorite books, some toys and of course, his sidekick Snoopy. I had just gotten off the phone with the pediatrician, "Yes", she'd said, "I want to see him.".  My message to the triage nurse had gone something like this: "Hi, this is Tucker's mom, he sees Dr So and So. He's a former 24 weeker. He's had a cold for 5 days. It's not getting better. I listen to ... View the Post

The Scrub Room

Week 1. We had started to corral all the foreign routines that were to become our life for the next 5 months. Showing our hospital bracelets to the receptionist. Remembering to bring the syringes of breast milk. Sorting out the faces between nurse, respiratory therapist, neonatologist, nurse practitioner, lactation specialist and social worker. Deciphering the monitor alarms from 'this is not good' to 'this is normal' to 'the nurses are running'. And of course, learning the ritual of scrubbing ... View the Post

Capturing December Update

I totally forgot some days. And at least on a couple of occasions, my Monica Gellar-Bing started showing as I set up shots over and over. ('and over' says Darrin from the couch). But in all, Capture December is doing what I had hoped it would. I'm taking extra long moments to be present. I've seen things this season that might have otherwise gotten overlooked. Pieces of December that in all likelihood, would have been packed back into a box on the 31st without a single pause to appreciate them. ... View the Post

Tucker’s Room

The 7th floor. It was a contradiction of space. At Presbyterian Hemby Children's Hospital, there are only 2 reasons you go to the 7th floor. The first is because you are excitedly awaiting news of the birth of a healthy, full term baby just one floor up. The other reason you go to the 7th floor is because you have a critically ill and very fragile baby in the NICU. In that one space, the shared waiting area, the emotions laid forth are almost bi-polar. On one couch sits a family with pink ... View the Post

Capturing December

I've been waiting since Thursday. For the call from Southern Living. Asking to feature my turkey on the cover of their next issue. Y'all, it looked really pretty. All that rosemary, garlic (doubled garlic=open window) and sage roasting in the oven made the turkey look very official. There were bumps in the road, it wasn't perfect by any measure. What the heck is savory? I looked for 5 minutes in the spice aisle (which by the way is home to the most unattractive names for food ever-tartar? ... View the Post

Who Is This Rookie?

I don't trust people who don't like sweets. Monica Gellar is my spirit animal. I work. I write. I mom. I pray. I wife. I eat. I go. First kid was born at 24 weeks and spent 151 days in the NICU-well that didn't go as planned. He fought and we cheered. I started writing during that time. Second kid was born on a Thursday night-her birthmom's hand in mine both of us crying happy tears. You'll find posts here about cheesecake, adoption, kindergarten shenanigans, hard stuff, Dolly Parton and whatever else I want. And you'll like it young lady. Thanks for reading. I always love adding to the team. Especially if you bring team snacks.
