Did Someone Say Cake?

I love cake. Good cake. You know, double (or triple) layers of cream made of butter and sugar between dense moist, awesomeness. A year ago for Tucker's first birthday, we had a pretty awesome cake. But Tucker didn't get to eat a slice. He just wasn't there yet with eating solid foods, he was only eating pureed food. We decided to freeze a big chunk, I couldn't bare for this kid to miss out on eating his first birthday cake. It's kind of a big deal. We were hoping at some point this year, he ... View the Post

The Other Side

"There are moments that mark your life. Moments when you realize nothing will ever be the same and time is now divided into two parts, "Before this." and "After this."   -Author unknown We're 30 days and counting. Isolation is technically over on April 1st in our region. For a micro preemie, typically 2 seasons of isolation is the recommendation and so this will be the last for us. As we approach the breakout date, I find my brain and heart full of thoughts. Tucker came home from the hospital ... View the Post

An Old Fashioned Tucker Report

When Tucker was in the hospital, like many families, we kept a Caringbridge page for updates. Many days I would issue the "Tucker Report" highlighting where we were and what the day had brought, his new weight, if he ate, how many bradys he'd had etc. It's been quite a while since I wrote a good old fashioned Tucker Report. It's totally ok if you want to skip through the report and get to the pictures. For a good snicker though, read the last two paragraphs. We're a month away from his 2nd ... View the Post

The Scrub Room

Week 1. We had started to corral all the foreign routines that were to become our life for the next 5 months. Showing our hospital bracelets to the receptionist. Remembering to bring the syringes of breast milk. Sorting out the faces between nurse, respiratory therapist, neonatologist, nurse practitioner, lactation specialist and social worker. Deciphering the monitor alarms from 'this is not good' to 'this is normal' to 'the nurses are running'. And of course, learning the ritual of scrubbing ... View the Post

Christmas. With a Kid.

Christmas was perfect. Here are the highlights: I had the clever idea to use doilies as name tags for our gifts. Tucker had the clever idea to remove them all when we weren't looking. I had no idea which tags went with which gifts. It was a Very Mystery Christmas. Amazingly the 4 nieces and nephews were all healthy for Christmas which meant we got to spend a little time with them even in isolation. Hand sanitizer works, yo. I ordered Tucker a slide that is so short, his feet actually ... View the Post

Capturing December Update

I totally forgot some days. And at least on a couple of occasions, my Monica Gellar-Bing started showing as I set up shots over and over. ('and over' says Darrin from the couch). But in all, Capture December is doing what I had hoped it would. I'm taking extra long moments to be present. I've seen things this season that might have otherwise gotten overlooked. Pieces of December that in all likelihood, would have been packed back into a box on the 31st without a single pause to appreciate them. ... View the Post

Who Is This Rookie?

I don't trust people who don't like sweets. Monica Gellar is my spirit animal. I work. I write. I mom. I pray. I wife. I eat. I go. First kid was born at 24 weeks and spent 151 days in the NICU-well that didn't go as planned. He fought and we cheered. I started writing during that time. Second kid was born on a Thursday night-her birthmom's hand in mine both of us crying happy tears. You'll find posts here about cheesecake, adoption, kindergarten shenanigans, hard stuff, Dolly Parton and whatever else I want. And you'll like it young lady. Thanks for reading. I always love adding to the team. Especially if you bring team snacks.
