Before and after Tucker’s complicated birth, we prayerfully and thoughtfully considered all the options for growing our family. Or not. We both felt the decision to expand our team couldn't really be made until we knew the extent to which Tucker’s needs might require 100% of our attention. So we waited, and listened. We talked to doctors and each other about things like odds, statistics and uncertainty. Our road to parenthood was rough the first go round, y’all. And while I've made peace with my ... View the Post
The 8 Year Gap
For those of you expecting Heather’s normal wit and charm, please don’t be disappointed. It’s Father’s Day so it’s my yearly opportunity to post on Team Hucks. Today is the third Father’s Day that I get to celebrate as a Dad. I’ll have to say they get better every year. But for 8 years, this day meant very little. I lost my dad to an ugly battle with cancer in January of 2003. For 8 years I had no father here to celebrate this special day. For 8 years I had no children of my own to ... View the Post
Always Buy a Dozen
“It’ll be no big deal.”, she said. “Just a few hours, he’ll be fine.”, she said. “What could go wrong?”, she said. She=Me. He=Tucker. And I am here to tell you, wrong=almost everything. The scene: My office after a therapy appointment. I needed to get just a few things done at the office, and his appointment was only 10 minutes away. We live a little less than an hour from my office (and this appointment), so instead of driving him home, then driving back to work, I brilliantly ... View the Post
To You
Today is Mother's Day. The day brings all kinds of feelings for all kinds of circumstances. So this. Is for you. To the mothers for whom today was a special day. The ones who, tonight, lay your head on the pillow, full up with love. To the moms who celebrated this day for the first time. To the mothers in waiting who long for a baby. To the moms who are doing parenthood solo, without a partner to recognize you on this day. To the moms who have had to say goodbye. The ones for whom this day ... View the Post
Christmas. With a Kid.
Christmas was perfect. Here are the highlights: I had the clever idea to use doilies as name tags for our gifts. Tucker had the clever idea to remove them all when we weren't looking. I had no idea which tags went with which gifts. It was a Very Mystery Christmas. Amazingly the 4 nieces and nephews were all healthy for Christmas which meant we got to spend a little time with them even in isolation. Hand sanitizer works, yo. I ordered Tucker a slide that is so short, his feet actually ... View the Post
Planet Reality
So, it was a big weekend for Team Hucks. On Friday, we had the unbelievable opportunity to speak to a crowd of 20,000 Ronald McDonald supporters. It was quite an experience, and maybe one of the coolest things we've done, ever. We told Tucker's story and gave much deserved praise for the Ronald McDonald House that served our family for 5 months. We love that house so much and were honored to be able to speak about the perfectness of it's mission. It was surreal and wonderful. Tucker got a ... View the Post
